On Monday 22 March 1954, Jules Feldman and Colin Ryrie formed Modern Magazines Pty Ltd and began their new magazine, Modern Motor. The first issue hit the stands on 9 May and sold 50,000 copies. Within the year, eight pages of advertising had risen to 34 and circulation averaged 58,000.
The magazine is most known for its 1956 scoop on the first new Holden since 1948. The issue sold 90,000 copies. From then, Modern Motor scooped almost every Australian car model. From 1965, Modern Magazines also Modern Boating, Australian Cricket, Australian Golf, Australian Motor Cycle Rider, Hi-Fi Review, Rugby League Week and Electronics Today, an international magazine with editions in Britain, Canada and France. In the mid 1970s, the company launched Movie, Audio Trader and Australian Camera magazines.
Terry Trowell was Art Director for Modern Magazines Pty. Ltd. from 1956 until about 1960.
19 Bridge Street is also used by Elmsdale Publications Pty. Ltd., around 1948 to 1955; and by Rosnock Pty. Ltd around 1950-1953. The address is known as Scottish House, 17-19 Bridge Street.
In 1979 Murray Publishing bought Modern Magazines, with titles later on-sold to Federal Publishing.
Some publishers used diverse publisher names in their comics. These can reflect distinct operating divisions, but may just disguise operations in the face of bans or censorship. Ausreprints records minor variations as they can help dating for undated comics.
