"The Purple People Eater" is the name of a novelty song written and performed by Sheb Wooley, which was released in the US in June 1958. It was number 1 in Australia in September 1958. The song tells how a "one-eyed, one-horned, flying, purple people eater" came to Earth because it wants to join a rock 'n' roll band.
