Biography
From 1936, Gold's short stories were published in various newspapers, as well as journals such as Smith's Weekly, Walkabout, Everylady's Journal, Woman, The World's News and Wireless Weekly.
In 1941, Gold's most famous creation, Devil Doone, featured (for probably the first time) in Gold's story 'The Case of the Fighting Brothers' (The Wireless Weekly v36#19, 10/5/1941). He wrote several more Doone stories for that publication (1941-1942), while providing many more for The World's News (1941-1944).
From 1948, Gold transferred the character into a comic series, originally published in K.G. Murray's Man Junior and reprinted in its own comic (1948-1972). Some episodes were reprinted in the US (Marvel) and France (Editions SEPP).
Gold wrote several Sure Fire Westerns for Frank Johnson Publications (1940s). In 1945, he won first prize of £50 in a short story competition, conducted by the Gayle Publishing Company for 'The Yellow Button'. He contributed to the company's GP Detective Stories (~1945-1950). He also wrote numerous short stories for K.G. Murray's men's magazines.
From as early as 1943, Gold was on the executive of the the Queensland Authors and Artists' Association and coordinated its short story competition (The Sun, 8/6/1943). The Fellowship of Australian Writers (Qld) Inc. continued to run the annual R. Carson Gold Short Story Competition, funded via The Trustee for R. Carson Gold Memorial Fund (ABN 99 296 569 814), an Australian not-for-profit.
From at least 1950 until at least 1954, Gold was head of the script department at Labor radio station 4KQ. One of his series was 'Radio Serenade', which presented legends from Greece, Egypt and New Zealand.
Notes
Gold's birth date is based the 'Coming-of-Age Party' reported for 'R. Carson-Gold', The Courier-Mail (Brisbane, Qld: 1933-1954), 4 May 1934, p. 20. [retrieved 28 Aug 2019, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article36732604], which matches Queensland birth data.
Gold's parents were Mabel Carson and Joyce Leith Gold (1886-1938), married on 12/08/1911. He had two brothers, William Lundsay Cameron Gold (1918-?) and Vernon Douglas Hamilton Gold (1916-1956).
