May Gibbs’ Bib and Bub first appeared in the Sunday News on 3 August 1924. Syndicated to newspapers across Australia and in New Zealand, the cartoons appeared in the Adelaide Mail, New Zealand Herald, the Melbourne Star, several Queensland newspapers and the Daily News in Gibbs' hometown of Perth. The strip ran 1968 episodes until 1967 (May Gibbs, Mother of the Gumnuts, by Maureen Walsh).
The stories are told in traditional British comic strip form—generally a series of illustrations internal captions, using a block of rhyming text beneath the image. The newspaper strips originally used handwritten text by Gibbs, which was later replaced with more legible typeset text.
The first collection of newspaper strips involved two soft-cover colour comics published for Christmas 1925, with the concurrent publication of a single hardcover volume of both parts. The collected edtions then became a Christmas tradition in 1927, 1928 and 1929. A mostly black-and-white 'painting book' of comic strips was released in 1932 with a final collection during the second world war.
All collections were published by Angus & Robertson, under a number of imprints, predominantly Cornstalk Publishing Company.
