Bantam Books

Wagon Train (Bantam Books, Inc., 1957?) has been grouped as part of a series of titles with related contents.

Initial Bantam books were numbered 1 to 158 (1945-1950). Bantam experimented with a subject-oriented numbering system in 1948, with number groups for various genres: 200 (western), 300 (mystery), 400 and 500. The system was abandoned in 1949.

From 700, numbers are generally sequential, subject to some skipped numbers and the introduction of pricing codes.

Bantam Books was the first company to add prefixed letters to its stock numbers to indicate different price levels. It's first 35 cent title, published in February 1950 was numbered A760. Other codes include F for 50 cents and S for 75 cents. Earlier codes without letters are 25 cent or 35 cents.

This information is summarised from "Cumulative Paperback Index, 1939-1959: A Comprehensive Bibliographic Guide to 14,000 Mass-Market Paperback Books of 33 Publishers Issued Under 69 Imprints" by R. Reginald and M.R. Burgess (Detroit: Book Tower, 1973).
