Frank Johnson 'New' One-Shots
The New Corker (Frank Johnson Publications, 1945?) has been grouped as part of a series of related series of one-shots.
During the second world war, new ongoing serials were prohibited to preserve paper supplies, but one-off publications were possible. Frank Johnson Publications (FJP) entered comics publishing with a series of one-shot anthologies, each issue using a new title.
Pulp Confidential (State Library of NSW) reports FJP's first issue was Amazing Comics in July 1941. This was followed the next week by Star Comics and an array of one-shot titles. When FJP ran out of new ideas for names, old titles were re-used with the addition of 'New' to the title: New Startling, New Magic and so on. Later, FJP adopted 'Magpie' branding in the one-shot titles.
Some popular features from these anthologies were also complied and reprinted by FJP in (mostly) one-shot titles.
