This publisher is not known to have produced comics and is included on AusReprints due to its association with Southdown Press.
Despite a similar name, Cumberland Newspapers is not related to the Parramatta Chronicle and Cumberland General Advertiser established in 1843 and renamed Cumberland Times and Advertiser two years later. That title ceased publication in 1911.
In 1933, a new publication titled the Parramatta Advertiser was created and a new Cumberland Newspapers Pty Ltd established in 1936 to operate it. The company expanded into a network of 24 suburban newspapers over subsequent decades and was sold to Murdoch's News Ltd in February 1960.
From the late 1960, Cumberland Newspapers took over publication of some Murdoch magazines.
Over the years, Murdoch has sold and acquired various suburban newspapers, largely controlling the market in competition Packer and Fairfax. In 2007, the group acquired the Federal Publishing Company and has subsequently transformed into NewsLocal and fully integrated with News Corp Australia.
