The conservative Bulletin magazine was first published January 1880 by J. F. Archibald and John Haynes, although The Bulletin Newspaper Co. was constituted 1883 with Archibald, Haynes and William Henry Traill as joint owners. After Archibald and Haynes were jailed for libel in 1881, Trail took over managing the company.
Traill and William Macleod (an illustrator at the Bulletin since the first issue and subsequently a majority owner) are credited with consolidating the paper into a thriving business by the turn of the century. Traill sold out in 1886 and in 1910 Macleod resigned as manager in favour of his son Norman.
In 1927, Macleod sold his major shareholding to general manager Samuel Henry Prior. His second son Henry Kenneth succeeded him as general manager
Henry Kenneth Prior had joined the Bulletin in 1910. Over the objections of William Macleod, Prior launched the Australian Woman's Mirror in 1924 to keep the Bulletin's presses busy. That magazine introduced the Phantom to Australia on 1 December 1936.
The Prior family retained control until the company was bought by Frank Packer’s Australian Consolidated Press in 1961. While losing money, it had a reputation which ACP used to transform it into a well-edited magazine of political and business news and commentary.
Private equity firm CVC Asia Pacific acquired a controlling share in Packers' PBL in 2007 and, within a year, The Bulletin's cancellation was announced. The final issue was January 2008, after 128 years of continuous publication--making it Australia's longest running magazine.
