Reed International Books Australia Pty Ltd was formerly known as Butterworths Pty Ltd. The company was incorporated in 1972 and is based in Chatswood, Australia. Reed International Books Australia Pty Limited operates as a subsidiary of RELX Group plc. Hinkler Books also at this Dingley address.
Hinkler was founded by Stephen Ungar and his father Robert, who had just sold Budget Books. They were joined by Terry Herbert, who owned the Queensland-based Bookworld chain before it merged with Angus & Robertson. Hinkler began in the same vein as Budget Books, buying publisher returns and selling them at a reduced cover price. But the company needed protection from publisher supply shortages. So, Hinkler bought the rights to back-list titles by big name authors including John Grisham, Michael Crichton and Ruth Rendell.
