Meteor is a short lived publisher known mainly for introducing Australia's first comic focused on the theme of radio, based on the British Radio Fun. It included features by radio personalities of the day. John Ryan concludes that "the comics... were among the poorest published in this country" (p. 196 Panel by Panel).
From 6 November 1946 for at least two months, Meteor Publications advertised in the Sydney Morning Herald for experienced advertising-space salesmen. On several occasions from 28 August 1947 it advertised "An Art Studio requires Senior and Junior Artists. Call with samples. Excel. prospects suitable girl. Mr. Bradford, Meteor Publications, 52 Pitt Street." An ad for a typist gave the contact as Mr Bookes at 195 Elizabeth Street (SMH 22 April 1947, and other dates).
The company's first Annual Return dated 22 July 1948 list the Directors as Noel Peisley Bookes (Business Broker, 28 Jersey St, Enfield), Raymond Cecil Bain (Business Broker, 26 Castle St, Randwick), Wallace Edward Neader (Publisher, 36 Kings Cross Rd, Kings Cross), Frank William Cossey (Publisher, 22 Taleeban Rd, Lane Cover) and Royce Oliver Summerfield (Accountant, 36 Holmwood Ave, enfield).
The company was responsible for the Meteor College of Radio and Meteor College of Art, 52 Pitt Street, which were promoted in its comics.
The company effectively ceased to operate around 1950 and was wound up. On 12 September 1951, Henry Charles Pymley notified that he was ceasing to act as receiver. In 1953, the NSW Government Gazette notified that 'Meteor Publications and Publicity Company Proprietary Limited' was to be struck off the register of companies and dissolved (#168 25 September 1953).
