James Henderson's company is best known as the pioneer of "picture" comics magazines, although it also holds fame for its serialization of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island and Kidnapped. Henderson began publishing newspapers and magazines on 5 January 1861. He published the first "picture" comic in 1874. The company was merged into Amalgamated Press in 1920.
