Invincible Press was founded in 1944 by Ezra Norton (1898-1967), proprietor of the Truth and Sportsman newspaper group, which included the Sydney Daily Mirror. As well as publishing comics and magazines, it produced many popular literature books, especially pulp crime thrillers, romances and westerns.
Norton's Invincible Press is often reported to have ceased operating in the mid-1950s and, if true, the publisher may have been taken over, as Invincible Press titles continued to be published. The most likely arrangement seems to be a temporary ownership by Fairfax before being absorbed into News Limited. In 1958 Norton sold all his shares in Truth and Sportsman to a subsidiary of Fairfax, with the company taken over by competitor News Limited two years later. From about 1960, some Invincible comic titles were published by Southdown Press, the publishers of New Idea and the magazine publishing arm of News Limited.
Invincible Press titles were mostly US reprints, but also included some UK and Australian creators. Non-comics publications include some sixteen titles by eleven Australian authors. The thriller and mystery series included a paperback series, True Crime; a paperback series, True Australian Crime, which included titles by authors such as Beatrice Grimshaw, Arthur W. Upfield and Dick Wordley; and a series known as The Thriller Club, two per month from 1953. Invincible Press also published Invincible Westerns, including many Australian authors; and Invincible Romances. (John Loder, Invincible Press Pulps, Melbourne, 2008)
