Gary Groth was born in Buenos Aires and raised in Springfield, Virginia. Under the pen name of J. Collier, Groth was credited as doing support work for Fantagraphics, first as writer and assistant editor for Amazing Heroes fanzine (1981-1982), as editor (1986 to 1987), and in production (1987 to 1989).
