Alan Hill grew up in Sydney before joining Merchant Service and later the coastal service. From about 1929, he began writing while at sea and did radio broadcasts on marine-related subjects. In 1930, he won a scholarship and studied writing.

Hill's short fiction was published in Australian journals and newspapers, including the Sydney Mail and Smith's Weekly. He wrote some western pulp novels and had scientific articles published in the UK.
