Biography

Before the second world war, Arthur Gorfain worked booking films for Metro Goldwyn Mayer. He started Press Feature Service Pty Ltd in late 1945 after serving five years with the RAAF. The company sold crosswords, columns, short stories, photo stories and comics to Australian newspapers and magazines (including Australian Women's Weekly).

In 1950, Press Feature Service employed 11 artists on staff, most under 22 years, with nine of them focused on children's puzzles. The company engaged George Roots, John Curtis and Royce Bradford, as well as handling freelance material by Stanley Pitt and 'Carmac'. Roots created Wilbur which ran in a few papers such as Hobart's The Mercury, Brisbane Telegraph and Singleton Argus from as early as February 1947 until at least 1954. Other Australian comics syndicated by Gorfain included the Sunday strip Holly by then 19-year-old June Shoesmith (1950).

Around 1950, Gorfain travelled overseas and became Australian representative for a number of agencies, such as The Daily Express, Daily Mail, London Punch and Curtis Brown. He placed Australian work internationally, including children's features and a "Cross-quiz" — a crossword puzzle with every clue a question.

Gorfain was editor and publisher of The Silver Jacket (1953-1956), a boys' magazine that had Australian comics alongside US reprints (Fawcett).

From September 1946 to 1954, Gorfain authored a political gossip column 'In Canberra Today', frequently reflecting conservative political sympathies. He also participated in the 1954 'Redex' around-Australia car reliability trials.

Press Feature Services syndicated Frontiers of Science, an strip of 'science fact' created in Sydney and published in over 600 newspapers worldwide between 1961 and 1982. The company also published some children's books.

Gorfain sold his company to Alan Foley Pty Ltd in 1963 and it was dissolved in 1974. Gorfain subsequently established the Sunset Motel chain throughout eastern Australia.
