Ayers & James by James Zee
Postscript: What was going on at 149 Castlereagh Street?
A number of other companies report offices at 149 Castlereagh Street, for at least a period of time, but do not seem to be associated with Ayers & James/Magazine Management:
Shakespeare Head Press Pty. Ltd: In 1946 Consolidated Press acquired a controling interest in the company.11p. 146 Bridget Griffen-Foley (1999), The House of Packer, Allen & Unwin, Australia.... Other owners of the company are unknown.
Tricho Publications Pty. Ltd: Frew used this name for a period of time in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Frew's use of the title Super Yank Comics probably doesn't suggest a relationship with Ayers & James.
W. G. Publications Pty. Ltd: WG Publications was the publisher of Disney comics in Australia from October 1946 to June 1974. It took over Disney publications from Ayers & James. However, the company and its founder, Walter Granger, are reasonably well documented and not known to be associated with Ayers & James.
Beaconsfield Productions Pty. Ltd.: Early issues of The Silver Jacket were published by Beaconsfield Productions which might have been listed at this address. The Silver Jacket was from the British tradition of Boys' magazines with mainly illustrated text stories.
The Grand United Order of Odd Fellows Building at 149 Castlereagh Street was a multi-story tower (at least seven floors) that included a diverse range of businesses, from lawyers to training colleges, and Electrolux retailers to fashion magazine importers.
In addition to the Magazine Management group, the building appears to have hosted a number of publishers in the 1950s. It possibly provided low cost office accommodation close to printing and other publishing requirements.
