The New Zealand Herald was founded by William Chisholm Wilson (1810-1876) and first published on 13 November 1863. Rival paper, The Daily Southern Cross, was acquired by Alfred Horton (1842-1903) in 1876.
Following the death of their father, brothers William Scott Wilson and Joseph Liston Wilson formed a partnership with Horton in 1876, and The New Zealand Herald absorbed The Daily Southern Cross.
Wilson & Horton Ltd continued to publish the New Zealand Herald as well as Auckland Weekly News (Weekly News from 1934). In 1996, the Independent News & Media Group of Dublin purchased the Horton family's interest in the company, with the company subsequently purchased by APN NZ, a subsidiary of APN News & Media.
